Upskilling your team in digital marketing: Is it worth your time?

In a world full of instants, from instant coffee to instant cash loans, it’s clear that we put a high value on our time. So, is it worth your time or your company’s time upskilling your current team members in the digital marketing realm as opposed to outsourcing when the need arises? 

Outsourcing might be your go-to as it is the fastest way to deal with the demands of traditional business with a decent number of team members.  A project begins and then none of the existing team members doesn’t know how to do it so they immediately look to or hire someone from the outside to do it for them.

Quick and easy, right? But maybe there’s some untapped potential already sitting in your team, and all they need is a little bit of extra time in their day. 

Getting to know your staff is important. But on top of that, knowing what their passions and skills are and what gives them job satisfaction can be the key to untapping their potential. 

Here’s an example.

Let’s say you are running a retail florist and you have been thinking of upping your game on your social media channels. It also happens that one of your team members has a bit of creative flair enjoys a little bit of photography in their spare time and they are pretty handy when it comes to social media.

I’m sure you can guess where this is going. Do you outsource, or do you give your team member a little more time in their day to help generate more content and develop their skills at the same time?

Allowing your team members the space to learn and develop skills they really love can give a whole new aspect to your business that wasn’t there previously.

They can also get more job satisfaction because they are doing something they really enjoy. There is something great when a manager or boss trusts you enough to not only invest in your skills but also values what you bring to their business. 

With regards to having the time developing your teams’ skills, it doesn’t take much.  The biggest hurdle is allowing them the time. There is a plethora of online videos and courses that are easily available and are relatively inexpensive and some of them are even for FREE like Google Certification courses, Facebook Blueprint and Hubspot Inbound Certifications to name a few.

To sum it all up, yes we are big fans and advocates of upskilling our team members here at Bidpixel and the benefits always tend to outweigh all of the cons that might come up along the way. It only takes a small investment of your time and money, but the rewards that will be reaped for both the company and the employees go a long way.
